Myths Vs Facts About Flu
Myths about the flu are everywhere. Did you know that the word “flu” is acquired from “influenza”?

The flu or influenza refers to an illness only caused by the influenza virus. Many people use the term flu to refer stomach flu or a common cold. People with influenza virus usually shows similar symptoms as people with a cold, though the symptoms are usually more severe in the former.

Let’s take a look of few myths and facts regarding the flu.

Myth #1: Getting vaccinated can give you flu.

Fact: There is no way that the vaccine can make you sick. Vaccines only contain a weakened or inactivated form of the virus, which cannot infect you. People often mistake the side effect of the vaccine for the illness itself. They may feel like mild symptoms of the flu, but soreness around the injection site is typically the only symptom people experience.

Myth #2: The flu is nothing more than just a bad cold.

Fact: Flu is more serious and can cause high fever, headaches and body aches, chills and severe fatigue. Meanwhile, cold has much milder symptoms such as runny nose, cough, sore throat and watery eyes. It generally lasts for 1 weeks but flu associated for up to 2 weeks or more. Flu could also lead to more serious complications and even death.

Myth #3: Antibiotics can fight the flu.

Fact: Antibiotics only fight bacterial infections. Since influenza or flu is caused by virus, antibiotics have no effect. Moreover, overuse or misuse of antibiotics can result in reduced effectiveness against bacteria that they are actually intended to kill.

Myth #4: Cold weather causes the flu.

Fact: The weather has become unpredictable and so we no longer truly have ‘seasonal’ flu. With more people traveling these days, diseases spread that much more easily than it did even a decade ago.

Nevertheless, everyone needs to take care of themselves intensively. Influenza could spread from person to person, often through air and can pass on the infection even before they begin feeling the symptoms. It is important for everyone to prevent it in the early state.
